ESEP-UC 2025

Engineering Summer Education Program for UC students,

School of Engineering, UTokyo

 

 Engineering Summer Education Program intended for students from the University of California, called ESEP-UC, is an opportunity for UC students to participate in scientific research projects at world-leading laboratories. This program is referred to as “UCEAP STEM Research in Tokyo Engineering” in UC. Based on a student exchange agreement, program participants will receive academic units at UC when participants complete the program.

 While the full-time laboratory program is six weeks long, the program also provides students with chances to learn about the Japanese culture and language.

 At the conclusion of the program, students must give a presentation in their laboratory and complete a report.

 

Program overview

1. Eligibility

1. At the time of the program junior or senior students from all campus of University of California
   
2. Students must have be recommended by UCEAP office
3. Students should meet the requirements in each laboratory indicated on the list.

2. Schedule

Arrival	June 18, 2025
EAP and UTokyo orientation	June 19, 2025
Program last day	July 30, 2025
Dormitory move-out	July 31, 2025

 

3. Participation requirements


• Students must dedicate themselves fully to participation in the summer program. Additionally, all students must be able to attend the program for its entire duration.
• Students must respect the work of all laboratory members, participate in activities in the laboratory (including daily life activities), and attend laboratory meetings/gatherings.
• At the conclusion of the program, students must submit a program report to the School of Engineering.

 

4. Host labs and research topics


Students will belong to one of the listed laboratories from the School of Engineering. 【See: List of Host Labs】

 

5. Number of participants

Up to 20 students

 

6. Scholarship

 For students enrolled in US universities we would recommend FUTI (Friends of UTokyo, Inc.) Awards. This is an internship award for some outstanding students. The students are able to apply for the category “Projects and Other” using FUTI’s web-based online application system in addition to submitting your ESEP-UC application.

Application

Nominated students by UCEAP must submit the following documents to University of California Tokyo Study Center for final selection made by the University of Tokyo.

1. Application Materials

• Personal information
• Personal statement
• Academic transcript
• 1 Letter of recommendation
• Copy of passport

2. Selection

Selection is based primarily on academic qualifications. Some laboratories may conduct online interviews around mid-February. Please make sure to provide an email address where you can be contacted. Selection results will be sent via UCEAP office.
